I spent a good amount of time thinking about medieval casting vs forging techniques while modeling this helmet. I tried my best to maintain a proper thickness in the steel so it wouldn't feel like sheet metal, I think this aspect is the most successful. I simulated the overall shape of the chain-mail in Marvelous Designer and then used mash networks in Maya to create the final model. The Mash network distributes twelve unique loops across the simulated surface that only have twelve unique UV coordinates. This allowed the 10K+ loops to be much more manageable. I used XGen in Maya to create the bear fur. The project was rendered using Arnold.
